The Malaysian Spa Culture

If you have always wanted to try out a spa, but are confused with the myriad of centres calling themselves ‘spas’, fret not, for here’s a run-down on the Malaysian spa culture and scene.

So you have been to a few spas. Perhaps tried out most of the treatments available. Then good for you. For the majority of the people out there, however, it’s not always a clear cut case of walking into a spa and getting your money worth. Often, you don’t get what you expect. Why’s that?

Spas in Malaysia have some nasty connotations to it. Ask your parents. They will tell you it’s a place you shouldn’t go. “Don’t be naughty, eh”.

Which is completely unfair to our burgeoning spa industry, of course. Many spas and wellness centres that have mushroomed over the past few years have invested huge amount of money, expertise and passion into building some of the most talked-about spas in the region. In fact, we are fast becoming the next spa destination in Asia, and our industry growth is the envy of many.

But when is a spa, a spa?

Jumping on the bandwagon of the current frenzy for everything spa-ish, are the mom-and-pop beauty salons and massage centres. Whilst there’s absolutely nothing wrong with such decent businesses, they are not technically a spa.

The general consensus in the industry is that a spa should contain several treatment rooms, offer a variety of treatments, have professionally trained therapists and have an ambience that soothes and relaxes.

In most spas, you should be able to obtain a massage therapy, and have the option for facials, exfoliation (body scrubs), body wraps, floral bath and so on. You will often be led through a series of consultations before you choose a treatment that’s suitable for you and that fits your budget and time. Some spas will go to the extent of offering ‘spa cuisine’ or healthy meals that’s low in calorie, fat-free and high in vitamins.

As a good spa focuses on relaxation and rejuvenation, you shouldn’t be made to go through lengthy sales pitches disguised as consultations and told to swipe your credit card for treatments you haven’t even decided on. If I’m you, I walk out from such establishments. Fast.

And a real spa don’t have skimpily dressed ladies at its entrances, nor allow you to choose your ‘masseur’. In fact, spas no longer use the term masseurs, in favour of the term ‘therapist’ as it’s not uncommon to have therapists spending up to a year in classes to learn academic and practical aspects of spa therapies.

Day spa vs. destination spa

As spas are each unique, the industry segments itself into various categories. It’s very much like hotels: you have 5 star, 4 star, etc, and you have seaside resort, city hotel, inns, and so on.

The most common type of spas is the day spa. This is very similar to beauty salons, in that you only visit the spa for the duration of your treatment, and when you are done – off you go. The difference is this: a day spa would have more variety of treatments than a typical salon, and focuses on pampering and rejuvenation instead of beauty and slimming. Which doesn’t mean a day spa does not offer facials and slimming, as most does.

A destination spa on the other hand, is built into a resort and is often the key attraction of the resort they are in. Some destination spas in fact, are entire resorts, and you cannot opt to just book a room – you need to take up the whole package. Which is why the new term hotel / resort spa has emerged, to describe spas that are based in a hotel or resort but is not the raison d’etre of their hosts. Similar to day spas, but often larger and more elaborate, destination spas also offer longer treatment sessions. A half day (3 to 4 hours) or full day (6 to 8 hours) is common, and you’re likely to see multiple day spa packages as well.

Day spa and destination spa asides, there’s now a multitude of new types of spas. Medical spa are gaining popularity in Europe and Japan, and don’t be surprised to see one in Malaysia very soon. A medical spa is essentially a day or destination spa that also provides medical treatments, usually skin-related, although treatments of allergy, high-blood pressure and other lifestyle diseases are common. A medical spa is run by a healthcare professional, and offers a combination of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) and spa therapies. A cruise ship spa and club spa are self explanatory.

A new trend is to have ‘specialist spas’ such as ‘nail spa’ or ‘hair spa’. These are of course not spas proper, but there’s no way to stop enterprising people from using the term. At least in these cases, you know what to expect.

Too expensive or too cheap?

For some, parting with RM 800 for a full day spa package seems like a small sum for a whole day of luxury and pampering. But to some, RM 100 for a one-hour reflexology seems like a rip-off when street-side peddlers are offering them at RM30. So, how much do you pay for a spa treatment?

The going price for a one-hour spa session in Kuala Lumpur is RM 80 to RM 250. The price you pay of course depends on the ambience, location, treatment, experience of therapists and facilities available. Like hotels, there’s various kind of categories – the more stars they have on that little board behind the reception, the more you should expect to fork out.

As spa visits are often very personal, even intimate in nature, you should not settle for anything less than a clean, professional environment. If you are offered a treatment for a lot less, be wary. Your therapist may be self-learned or worse, completely untrained – and you walk away with a back-sore and more problems in the future. If you can’t afford to go regularly to a good spa, then it’s better to save for an irregular session, than to visit a street-side establishment with dubious training and certification, that uses cooking oil (yes, it happens!) to massage you.

Langkawi Spa Resorts

Four Seasons, Langkawi

Head for the island of Langkawi in the Andaman Sea off Malaysia’s west coast where mythical tales, massages, facials, manicures and pedicures offer a heady mix for all wallets. At the JivaRhu Spa, Tanjung Rhu Resort, you’ll be pampered at one of 12 independent villas, built on a stretch of landscaped gardens with views of the Andaman Sea. Villas come complete with intimate open-air enclaves, private gardens, outdoor steam rooms, saunas, showers and outdoor Jacuzzis. It’s a natural gem, quiet and peaceful, nestled between lush rainforests and crystal clear waters. A combination of unmistakably Malay influenced massages, facials, body scrubs, wraps, hand and foot spa treatments are offered. Marine based treatments like algae seaweed wraps are just as popular. Manicures and pedicures start from RM95 (US$25).

For a rather different flavour, pop into the newly opened Cakra Ayurvedic & Wellness Spa, housed within the vast and very rustic back-to-nature Kampung Tok Senik Resort. Here, it’s all about holistic healing, utilizing the principles of Ayurveda to enhance total well being while balancing and rejuvenating the body, mind and spirit. Their day programme is endless; beginning with yoga, herbal drinks, herbal packs, and mudpacks before proceeding with personalized Ayurvedic and naturopathic treatments, acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology. After all this, there’s meditation. Only pure herbal and natural products are used in treatments and portions are freshly prepared and customized to suit your individual requirements. To savour the ultimate benefits of the Ayurvedic experience, be prepared for a whopping seven days of therapy, costing approximately RM600 (US$157.87) a day. Sample Manasa at RM250 (US$65.80). Relax your body with an authentic Ayurvedic oil massage followed by continuous flowing of oil on your forehead, using specially prepared medicated herbal oil to relax the mind.

The Spa, Datai Langkawi

Other spas like the The Spa at The Andaman and the The Spa at The Datai are all Balinese inspired in hugely atmospheric settings – both resorts are sited in a secluded corner of Langkawi Island within mature, protected rainforest. The Spa at The Datai is a spoiling, upmarket, escape, all the more pleasurable if you happen to be staying at this stunning property with its lovely beach cove. At the luxurious Mandara Spa, a must-try is the Datai Massage: a fusion of Shiatsu, Thai, Swedish, Balinese and Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi.

Recommended is Casa Del Mar’s The Spa, where massages take place in airy pavilions fronting the sea. Double massage sessions can be arranged for couples to unwind together. A one-hour relaxing aroma massage costs RM165 (US$43.41). This is a nice intimate retreat, well worth a visit. Perdana Spa at the Sheraton Perdana Resort offers a wide range of massages, wellness and beauty treatments. The current best-selling all-in is the ‘Perdana Day Spa Package’, featuring a choice of morning and afternoon treatments, plus a healthy lunch. The spa itself, however, consists of just three normal rooms within the hotel set aside for treatments. The spa menu at Teratai Spa, Pelangi Beach Resort is extensive with a good mix of Asian-inspired facials, body wraps, scrubs, massages and hair care. The Moorish-style Four Seasons Resort Langkawi has 20 villas, each with a private spa and treatment room, as a well as a dedicated spa, "suspended over water" - a special touch.

Penang Spa Resorts

Not too far south from Langkawi is the island of Penang, where pampering goes hand in hand with an obloigatory bowl of steaming laksa (noodles in coconut curry broth). Look out for the luxurious destination spa Chi at the all-new Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort that reopened after lengthy refurbishment and remodelling end September 2006. The rejuvenated Rasa Sayang and Chi Spa hope to raise the bar and energise Penang’s tourism comeback.

Tanjung Rhu, Langkawi

Penang’s latest addition is Sanjiwani Spa at Jerejak Resort & Spa. Set in the former penal colony of Jerejak Island, the spa, perched atop a hill, allows for stunning views of the sea, hills and glittering lights of the city. Choose top-to-toe pampering with traditional Javanese, Sundanese, Thai or Balinese massages, as well as facials, body scrubs, wraps and aromatherapy. The RM550 (US$144.73) three-hour spa package, consisting of scrub, bath and massage, throws in a sumptuous buffet lunch as well.

The Northam is all reflective gold and glitter on the outside but remarkably tasteful inside. Suites are elegant with lots of gleaming wood and sharp finish. There is a Suite Spa at Level 9 with nine treatment rooms, all with turbo water-massage, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. The stunning pool on the same level, offers breathtaking views of Georgetown and the sea. There is a broad-timber lounging deck if you simply wish to snooze. Close by Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang is the Parkroyal, now renovated and known as the Grand Plaza Park Royal. The place is cheery nonetheless and is a good Penang family resort now with the addition of the St Gregory Spas Penang offering everything from aromatic rubdowns to Balinese massage for harried parents.

At the private and secluded Mutiara Beach Resort Penang at a far corner of the island beyond Batu Ferringhi, there's an authentic Jamu Spa, jet-fresh from Bali. Traditional Indonesian remedies include the obligatory Javanese Lulur, Vanilla & Mocha Scrub and papaya and mint body wraps.

Perak Spas

Privately owned Pangkor Laut basks in all the usual publicity surrounding a top island getaway. It’s no wonder hundreds of travel pilgrims the world over keep coming back religiously to the Spa Village at the Pangkor Laut Resort. Spa Village has tended to the nails and toes of some famous stars. Perhaps dangerously, on this idyllic island, all cares (including your mounting credit card bills), are easily forgotten. Leap into the Ayurvedic, Chinese, Balinese and Japanese spa menus. There are resident Ayurvedic, Malay and Chinese spa specialists for consultation. Begin your spa experience with a footbath and an invigorating Chinese Foot Pounding – previously only enjoyed by Chinese concubines. Not to be confused with foot binding.

Next, relish the traditional Malay ‘circulating’ bath before surrendering to a Japanese-style cleansing with a goshi-goshi cloth. This is then followed by a dip in the heated rotenburu pool. Try the Shanghai Scrub, where a masseuse gently exfoliates and washes your body. The spa’s signature Malay herbal wrap, combines local herbs such as lemon grass, ginger, galangal and camphor to hydrate and detoxify the skin. A 50-minute massage starts at RM250 (US$65.78). The Spa Village features both indoor and open-air spaces spread over four acres along a quiet bay between the sea and the rainforest. Stay at any one of the 22 spa villas, situated over the sea with direct access to the Spa Village. It’s enough to make you sing like Luciano Pavarroti. After all, he has stayed here too.

Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Spas

Shangri-La Putrajaya: Zodiac style

If you’re nursing a hangover following a throbbing night in the city, drag yourself to Spa Indrani. A sought after address, this spa promises a spanking new you with its Hangover Package, that includes a two-hour reviving scrub, body steam, aromatherapy massage plus head and scalp therapy. This remedial package will set you back a mere RM388 (US$102.11). Not bad at all if you’re guaranteed to look your best for the remainder of your stay. Many vouch for the popular two-and-a-half hour Anggur (grape) Indrani, said to be available in just one other place – Paris. It comprises a grape-seed scrub, grape wrap using grape extract and banana leaves, along with a massage with moisturising oils, minus the European price tag. Modelled on the Balinese theme, Spa Indrani pays attention to little details. They whip up some salad so you don’t have to leave with a growling stomach after hours of treatments. There’s also the free use of the swimming pool, Jacuzzi and outdoor pavilions where you can relax at this tastefully converted old bungalow.

The well-heeled are all clamouring to join the chic, award-winning urban Energy Day Spa. The city’s only day spa is positively Zen-like, swathed in light, clean lines and contemporary aesthetics. Energy Day Spa adopts a holistic approach to wellness, treating the body, mind and soul with everything from sun damage and pigmentation to out-of-balance chakras. Another spa has opened! Nestled behind the latest fitness centre to hit the city – True Fitness – and among small boutiques and restaurants, is Zen Soul. You may complain, not another spa!, but Zen Soul does have its charms.

It’s a quick walk-up to the spa, and you’re greeted by the spa’s friendly manager, Joan. You’re seated and offered a drink. Your feet are washed by a spa assistant, and within seconds you are summoned to a private room for your massage. There are very few choices of massages, but perhaps it is as well, as the masseurs are experts in a particular treatment and you won’t end up confused as to what to choose. There are only three types (though Joan did say more would be added later) – Aromatherapy, traditional and foot, neck and shoulder massages.

Like all massages, this was restful and reassuring. According to the masseur the massage I had was a blend of Malaysian, Swedish and Hawaiian treatments. Truly a round-the-world trip!

If you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up, Zen Soul is a good place to go. Great things come in small packages, as they say.

Massage

Luxuriate in comfort as professional hands knead at tired muscles and soothe knotted tension away. A body rub in KL is always value for money - most Asians have perfected the art of massage and here is no exception. There are various massages with differing techniques used, but whatever you choose, the expert hands of the masseur will have you completely relaxed in no time.

Aromatherapy

The ancient Egyptians used it, so did the Chinese, Italians and Indians. Aromatherapy has been around for a long time and involves using essential oils of plants - seeds, bark, stem, blossoms, resins and leaves - that are combined with certain "carrier oils" to use in a massage. Aromatherapy treatments include massages, facials, body wraps, baths, inhalations and compresses. As beneficial as it may be, aromatherapy may not be suitable for expectant mothers as some oils may pose a danger to them. True essential oils are commonly kept in dark glass bottles.

Available facials range from Western-style to traditional Eastern ones. For traditional treatments, Awana Resorts has appointed Mustika Ratu, a well-known Indonesian cosmetics chain to oversee its beauty programme, which will first start at the Awana Kijal in Terengganu.

Water Treatments

Get your tired muscles rejuvenated by spending some time in the water through hydrotherapy and thalassotherapy. Hot and cold baths, compresses and underwater massages are some of the very tempting things to try out when you sign up for a hydrotherapy package. Thalassotherapy uses seawater and marine products. As nothing beats soaking in a bath after a long hard day, spend an hour or two in a floatation tank or bath. The fragrant essential oils used in aromatherapy, combined with the use of jet showers spraying water directly onto your body is also good for the soul.

Body Wraps
